What is a giclee? Comparing Lithograph to Giclee
WHAT IS A GICLEE’?
A giclee’ (zhee-CLAY) is an individually produced, high-resolution, high-fidelity reproduction of an original painting. Giclee’s are printed on canvas compared to the museum paper used in lithograph production. Giclee’s are superior in quality to traditional lithography in several ways.
The colors are brighter, last longer, and are so high-resolution that they are virtually continuous tone, rather than tiny dots.
The details are crisper.
The ink sprayed onto the canvas page is actually mixing the color on the page to create true shades and hues.
Giclee’s were originally developed as a proofing system for lithograph printing presses, but it became apparent that the presses were having a hard time delivering the quality and color of the giclee’ proofs. They evolved into the new darlings of the art world and are coveted by collectors.
THE GICLEE’ IS THE CLOSEST THING TO THE ORIGINAL ARTWORK THAT A COLLECTOR CAN FIND. GICLEE’S RETAIN THE HIGHEST ARTISTIC AND INVESTMENT VALUE- LONG AFTER AN ART PIECE HAS BEEN RETIRED FROM PRINT.
Their fidelity and quality are desired by galleries worldwide.
